Oscar, The cat that can predict death

Posted by jai on Thursday, July 26, 2007

"Ah, Oscar," she smiles, and with a nod, almost as if she were expecting him, allows him to pass into the room where a frail elderly lady, her body ravaged by cancer, is sleeping fitfully. Oscar sniffs ostentatiously around, resists the blandishments of the relatives gathered round the bedside, struts out and continues on his round. For the lady in room 310, the time has not yet come.

Yet his skills of divination are beyond question - and have even been the subject of an article in as august a publication as the New England Journal Of Medicine. To date he has predicted the deaths of 25 patients, and done so with such accuracy that he has completely won the trust of even the initially incredulous medical staff.

"This cat really seems to know when patients are about to die," says Dr David Dosa, a geriatrician at Rhode Island hospital who also attends patients at Steere House.

"We started to see something was happening about 18 months ago and at first I think we were all very sceptical. But it's not an unusual occurrence for patients to die here, so we've had plenty of opportunities to witness and observe the phenomenon."

First resident of Dubai's palm-shaped man-made island

Four years ago there was nothing here but unbroken sea. Now there's Andrew Dukes and his luxury mansion - sitting on a palm-shaped, man-made island - the first of about 100 houses to open here.

"I got exactly what I paid for and I'm very happy with it," said Dukes, 43, a tanned Englishman who just moved into his colossal home on Palm Jumeirah, Dubai's greatest-yet construction project.

When finished, Palm Jumeirah will number about 120,000 residents and workers spending their days on an island made of rock blasted from nearby mountains and sand dredged from the bottom of the Persian Gulf.

Each of the 100 mansions sits on a kilometre (half-mile) long palm frond, packed in among dozens or sometimes hundreds of others.

Sharing close quarters with his neighbours doesn't bother Dukes, formerly an executive with a London-based Internet company.

"Living in London you're absolutely on top of each other. So if you're English-European coming here, you think the plot size is more than adequate," he said.

First Live Giant Squid Photographed

Posted by jai on Monday, May 14, 2007

This extraordinary image, captured by Japanese scientists, marks the first-ever record of a live giant squid in the wild. The mysterious deep-sea creature has inspired countless sea monster tales and a variety of scientific expeditions.

The giant squid was photographed 2,950 feet (900 meters) beneath the North Pacific Ocean in Japanese waters, where scientists attracted it toward cameras on a baited fishing line.

Many giant squid have washed up on beaches or have been found dead or dying in fishing nets. This specimen was found in New Zealand in 1996.

The Walton Sextuplets.

When grown-up children decide to return to the nest, it can be a blow to their parents' new-found freedom.

But when the children in question happen to be sextuplets, the strain could push a family to breaking point.

Fortunately for Graham and Janet Walton, the pleasure of having five of their six 23-year-old daughters back home far outweighs the upheaval it has caused.

The couple, who made history in 1983 with the birth of the world's only all-girl sextuplets, said that they couldn't be happier.

"I love that they're all around," said Mrs Walton, 54. "It would be so lonely without them. All I want now is for them to produce some grandchildren."

All six girls - Hannah, Luci, Sarah, Kate, Jennie and Ruth - moved out soon after they turned 18, but over the years returned one by one, the family tells this week's edition of First magazine.

Premie Feet

On October 24th 2006, Amillia Taylor was born at 21 weeks and six days. No baby born at less than 23 weeks gestation had ever survived, but 10 ounce Amillia was able to pull through (and even was trying to breath and cry on her own at birth). Hospitals had initially hoped to release her yesterday, but decided to keep the now healthy baby a few extra days for observation.

Were the Pyramids Made With Concrete?

Posted by jai on Wednesday, December 27, 2006

" Concrete one was spilled to construct great pyramids approximately 5,000 years ago, according to the controversial investigation, that suggests the old Egyptans predated the Romans by thousands of years as the inventors of the concrete one. Michel Barsoum, professor of materials who directs in the university of Drexel in Philadelphia, and colleagues disclose in the present application the newspaper of the society of American ceramics that the pyramids were constructed with a combination of stones and blocks carved of the concrete one stone-based.
